It’s time for week two of the travel series here on Pebble & Pearl! This week we’re going to explore Manchester, England. Each week, I’m connecting with a lovely blogger from around the globe to explore the beautiful city they live in or love to visit. If you missed last week, Ingrid from That Scandinavian Feeling took us to all her favorite spots around her gorgeous city of Milan, Italy.
I’m so excited to explore Manchester, England with Onyi Moss from the amazing blog, Mossonyi! As most of you know, England is a place that’s very dear to my heart. After many visits and time spent living in London, I’ve come to think of it as a second home. I couldn’t dream of doing a travel series without it and had to sneak it in! I instantly thought of having Onyi share about her awesome city of Manchester, which is a city I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting yet. I’ve been such a fangirl of Onyi’s fabulous style and killer photos for a while now. I always find myself giving that heart eyes emoji on all her instagram photos! She, along with her husband Craig, create some truly inspiring content that I always look forward to seeing and I know you’ll enjoy too. Let’s explore Manchester, England!
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your blog?
My name is Onyi, and I’m a self taught fashioned lifestyle photographer based is Manchester, UK. Originally from Nigeria, I moved to the UK to advance my career as a chartered accountant. I later discovered my passion for photography which led to the creation of my blog Mossonyi. I currently run my blog with my husband Craig, and together we create fashion, lifestyle and travel content.
I love your photography style and really enjoy watching videos on your YouTube channel! Since you do all your own filming, photography, and editing, do you find that it has an influence on your experience when you travel?
Thanks for taking out the time to view my work. Assuming the role of creative and photographer does help a lot when travelling. My husband and I work together as a team, and come up with a plan that allows us to reach our desired objective. We not only get to save money on hiring a photographer, we also get to improve our skills which further helps us create better content.
What are some things you can’t leave home without when you’re off on an adventure?
My camera, a pair of blue jeans, my glasses, a hat, and a journal.
So tell us, what are some things that you love about your city?
I do love a lot of things about Manchester, but one thing I love the most is its diversity. It is a very welcoming city filled with eclectic characters. The city has everything you need to feel at home. It’s like London without the need for speed. Anyone can fit in here.
When someone’s visiting, where’s the first place they need to go to?
Manchester has a lot to offer to tourists, but I’d say the first place they need to visit is the city centre. There’s a lot to see. Picadilly Gardens is a good spot to sit to watch the fountain display and feed the pigeons. You might find it a bit crowded on a hot summer day. Then, there’s China Town. It’s full of colour with lots of restaurants offering Chinese delicacies. There’s also a garden there where you can sit and take in the view. It’s best to visit at night, as the lights make China Town come alive.
The Manchester Art Gallery is another place to pop into. There’s always a special exhibition going on. One of my favourite till day was the 100 Years of Vogue. You’ll come across a number of museums. I’d highly recommend the Museum of Science and Industry. Spread across two buildings, it holds a lot of British industrial history with automobile and aircrafts on display, as well as coal trains which you can take a ride on to experience old Britain.
Outside of the city centre, there’s still much to see. Old Trafford being the home of Manchester United, you will enjoy all it has to offer. It is a top tourist spot. Trafford Centre is also a good place to shop. Home to cinemas, high street store, and restaurants, you’re bound to have a filled day in this very ornate structure.
I’m all about the food scene in a new city! Where are your favorite spots to taste what the city has to offer?
Your best bet is Spinningfields. It is located right in the heart of the city centre. There are a mix of restaurants and bars that offer meals from different continents. My favourite for drinks would be The Alchemist, and my food would be Artisan.
Are there any hidden gems that you’ve discovered since living there?
Yes, there is a coffee bookshop called Chapter One! It has old typewriters, plants, and lots of books you can read while eating cakes and sipping some tea. A lot of creative tend to go there to work. It’s located in the city centre. I love it!
After all that exploring and eating, we’ll need a place to sleep! Where are the best areas and places to stay?
You would want to stay in the city centre, as that is where everything happens. In Manchester, there are many boutique hotels ranging from high to low depending on your budget. It is the place to be.
Most importantly, what do we need to pack for a summer adventure to Manchester?
Sorry to disappoint, but Manchester is known as “Rainchester”. So, an umbrella would be highly recommended. A jumper would also be needed, as we do experience some cold days in summer. Sneakers would come in handy for exploring all the city can offer.
