We all love the classic denim and t-shirt outfit– it’s easy, it’s comfy, and it’s pretty damn near the perfect combo. At my core, I’ve always been a denim and t-shirt gal and probably will always be. When I’m in a rush or just longing for something comfortable to slip into, they are my go-to combo in every season. As perfect as the denim and t-shirt outfit might be, it’s easy for your basics to become, well, basic!
We all want to look effortlessly stylish in the midst of our busy lives and need great basics in our wardrobe to help us to get there. It can be all too easy to look “slouchy” and give off that “fresh-off- the-couch vibe” when wearing a simple denim and t-shirt outfit. There are a few ways, though, to ensure that you stay comfortable and stylish while looking like a million bucks in your clothing.
Here are some easy ways to step up your denim and t-shirt outfit that’ll keep you from looking anything but basic!
The T-Shirt– Nothing is more essential than a t-shirt in the summer! From outdoor concerts to picnics in the park, a t-shirt should be your “bestie” all summer long. You can go with something light weight to keep you cool or a t-shirt with a little more structure, which is my personal preference. I’ve tried a lot of different brands and Everlane is, by far, my favorite! I seem to always make holes in my tee’s almost immediately after wearing them. I still can’t figure out why but, these have stood the test of time. Plus, they’re less than $20!
The Teeny Tiny Denim– Let the short shorts and mini- skirt season commence! When those temps turn to triple digits here in Sacramento, wearing minimal clothing keeps me sane. Denim cut-offs are what I throw on over a swimsuit when I’m heading to the pool or lake when the days get really hot. A denim mini skirt is great for a summer day or evening. You can’t go wrong with either option! You can find some really cute denim cut offs and skirts at your local vintage shop that’ll keep you stylin’ all summer!
The Jean Jacket– I don’t know about you, but even in the summer I like to have a jacket handy because it’s always freezing when I go anywhere inside. I dread going grocery shopping in the summer and passing by the refrigerated and frozen aisles because I definitely turn into a popsicle! Try stepping up your jean jacket game by going with something embellished or one with some color, like this pastel pink number. Not only will you look the part of summer fashionista, but it’s the perfect summer layer to have handy if you get chilly.
The Statement Belt– An easy way to spice up your basics this summer is to add a statement belt. It’ll help pull your whole outfit together and make it look like you put in lots of thought and effort into what you’re wearing without having to do anything more than loop a belt through the buckles.
Colorful Sunnies– Another accessory that you need in order to keep your basic look from being basic is a pair of colorful sunnies! Sunglasses are such a fun, easy way to change the whole feel of your outfit, especially on days where it’s too hot for additional layers. Personally, I don’t like to spend a ton of money on sunglasses because the styles come and go so quickly and I won’t have a heart attack if I lose or break them. I snagged these in the Nordstrom BP section for $12 and I couldn’t be happier.
The Embellished Bootie– Do the unexpected and add some spice to your look by putting on a pair of statement booties instead of sandals. Boots don’t have to just be for the Autumn and Winter seasons, you can sport them in the summer too. They’re the perfect shoe for all those outdoor summer concerts!
