On the weekend, I’m looking for something that’s easy, comfortable and will keep me relatively cool while I’m out and about. I love to go to the Midtown Farmers Market on Saturday mornings wearing my boyfriend jeans. I grab a coffee, enjoy brunch with friends or get those errands done. If I’m not going to walk out of the house in my go-to athletic wear, then I’m going to make sure that I’m as close as I can be to that level of comfort. I’m the type of woman who prefers denim over dresses which can get a bit tricky in the summertime when temperatures are on the rise. Boyfriend jeans with rips or “air vents” as I like to call them, have become my favorite style of jean to carry me through the summer. The relaxed fit jean is a beautiful thing and has been made more attractive by all the rips– they keep your legs feeling happy instead of suffocating like they would in a fitted pair. I have never understood why someone would purposely buy jeans that were ripped (that would be the practical Meaghan thinking) until I purchased a pair of boyfriend jeans. OMG, I totally get it now!! These jeans are fabulous, but it took me a minute to figure out what to look for and how to style them. I wanted to give you a few tips I discovered to looking stylish in boyfriend jeans.
Don’t spend a fortune
If you’re going to purchase ripped jeans, be that boyfriend or any other kind of jeans for that matter, keep the price point low. These are not a staple item in your closet (think coat, white tee, and boots) that merits spending $100 plus, although you’re more than welcome to. These are a one or two season item that will soon have holes so big that you have to recycle them into something new or get rid of them all together. They are a fun trendy item, but not worth lots of your hard earned dollars. I love shops like Zara and Forever 21 for denim under $50.
Equal parts boyfriend/girlfriend
Boyfriend jeans are sometimes really difficult to style because of their baggy fit. They are so cute, but one can often wonder what to do with the things! I find that I like the formula of pairing boyfriend jeans with something that falls into the girlfriend category, meaning a top that’s cropped, fitted, or flowy to bring a bit of balance to the overall look. Here I styled my jeans with a loose fitting, but cropped, lace top to keep my look flowy and easy. I also love styling boyfriend jeans with a fitted top and or a bodysuit to give me shape. If a top that’s fitted or cropped is not something you feel comfortable in, the next best option is to wear a top that you can tuck in either in front or all the way around. This way, you accomplish the boyfriend/girlfriend formula in a less dramatic, yet still fabulous way.
Keep the accessories minimal
Boyfriend jeans make a big statement all on their own and don’t require much assistance. The whole vibe of these jeans is casual and comfy, so uncomplicated accessories just make sense. I love wearing slide sandals or a simple heel if I’m going for a dressier look. I like to accessorize this kind of outfit with another item that I have been loving lately, the choker. I’m not a flashy jewelery kind of gal, so chokers are right up my alley and add the perfect touch to this kind of outfit.
Hope these tips were helpful and you try out my “air vent” jeans!
