Anyone who knows me, knows that for the past several years, I’ve always needed to have my brows done before leaving the house. I definitely felt like I had a naked face without my brows done! No mascara? No worries! Didn’t shave my legs? There are bigger problems in the world. But walking outside without my brows done… NEVER! I wasn’t blessed with full, beautiful brows and I’ve always felt a bit self-conscious about going natural. Filling and shaping my brows just became part of my morning ritual in the same way that drinking coffee and brushing my teeth were.
The first time that I heard the term “Microblading”, I was like, “Umm… what is Microblading?” It was a completely foreign term. When I discovered that it was a magical procedure that’d give me fabulous brows without the daily fuss of applying makeup, I had to learn more! As I began to look into it, I was impressed with the process and the difference it made on the brows that I was seeing.
Since microblading is a somewhat permanent process, I wanted to make sure that I found someone who’s style I liked and had awesome reviews from clients. That’s when I found SJ Microblading here in Sacramento! I knew that they were “the one” after reading countless positive reviews on Yelp and seeing so many beautiful brows before my eyes. Plus, the fact that they were booked solid for months in advance was a testamant of Sandy’s, the Owner and miracle worker, abilities.
During my consultation, Sandy listened to the look I wanted to achieve with my brows and we discussed the options. Based on that, we decided that I would have shading done in addition to the microblading to achieve an even fuller looking brow. Think of the look you get from filling your brows with powder or gel when doing your makeup. Once that big decision was made, it was time to make the brow dream into a reality! I got so many questions when I posted my experience on IG stories, the most common question being, “What is microblading?” and “How is it done?” so, I wanted to give you some answers! Here’s everything you need to know about microblading…
What Is Microblading?
It’s the pathway to perfect brows, of course! If you’re looking for a more indepth answer, I can tell you that microblading is a semi-permanant makeup procedure where pigment is added to your skin in the form of hairlike strokes. It’s very similar to the process of getting a tattoo, or so I’m told.
What Does It feel Like?
Microblading feels like light scratches across your skin. Before the session starts, a numbing cream is placed on your brows so that you aren’t in any pain once the procedure starts. How it feels really just depends on your pain tolerance, some people find it to be a pleasant experience and others people who are wimps, like myself, are pretty uncomfortable the whole time, even with the cream. It’s like they say though, “Beauty is Pain!”
How Long Does It Take?
The whole appointment takes about two and a half hours. Your first appointment includes a consultation where you and Sandy discuss how you want your brows to look and then go through the very detailed process of making sure your brows are perfect and are exactly how you want them to look before she begins the procedure. It’s a lot of Sandy drawing out your brows, snapping photos to make sure they’re symmetrical, and then getting up to look in the mirror to make sure you like them.
How Long Does It Last?
Microblading will last anywhere from one to two years, depending on how you care for them. Things like exercise, sun exposure, your skincare routine, and age can affect how long the procedure lasts.
How Long Does It Take To Heal?
The healing process can take anywhere from one to two weeks. My brows took closer to two weeks to scab and fully peel. Once the microblading procedure is finished, you’re given care instructions to take you through the healing process. For the first three days, I had to apply Aquaphor on my brows every three hours and then let them begin to dry and scab on the fourth day. Since it’s crucial that you don’t get your brows wet, makeup removing wipes were my go-to to cleanse my forehead, eye area, and temples while my brows healed. My faves are the Pacifica Pineapple Wipe Out
Is Your Fitness Routine Affected While Your Brows Are Healing?
I think this was the hardest part for me. After the procedure, you can’t engage in anything that will cause excessive sweating since it can cause the ink to fade or smear during the healing process. For me that meant no crossfit or cardio of any kind which is ridiculously hard for someone who likes to stay active. During the healing process I stuck with lifting weights and climbing, so I was still staying healthy.
What Happens After? Are You Seeing Results?
After your brows will go through phases of scabbing and falling off which is kind of freaky because it seems like everything you just went through is going to be ruined. Once that part is done, your brows are very light in color until the ink begins to come back through. Some spots your brows will be a bit patchy, but don’t worry because this is what the touch-up appointment is for. This appointment takes place two to three months after where final adjustments and improvements are made to any areas of the brow that need it.
After Touch Up Has Healed
Pre- Microblading and Post- Touch Up
I’m extremely happy with how my brows look after they’ve healed from the touch up! Sandy did an amazing job and giving me beautiful brows. Sandy is currently booked solid, but feel free to reach out to see when they’ll be accepting new clients. I hope this answers all of your “What is microblading” questions! If you have any more, please feel free to leave them in the comments.
